Look, we get it. Life moves fast. Between the early shifts, the community service, and the daily grind of being a hero in your own right, it’s tempting to hit a button on a machine and hope for the best. But sometimes, you need to slow down to speed up. You need a ritual that matches the weight of your day.
Enter the French press. It’s the manual transmission of the coffee world. It’s tactile, it’s intentional, and when done right, it produces a cup of coffee that has more "soul" than anything you’ll find in a drive-thru. But here’s the kicker: even the best technique in the world can’t fix bad beans. To get that visionary, life-changing cup, you need to start with the Peacemaker Standard.
In this guide, we’re going to walk you through the art of the press, why "clean coffee" isn't just a buzzword, and how to fuel your mission with the highest-grade fuel available.
Why the French Press?
The French press is a full-immersion brewing method. Unlike drip coffee, where water passes through a paper filter and takes most of the essential oils with it, the French press lets the grounds sit in the water. This results in a heavy, velvety mouthfeel and a bold, robust, unapologetic flavor profile.
When you use high-quality beans like ours, specifically those that are SCA 82+ specialty-grade, you want to taste every single note. The French press doesn't hide anything. It puts the quality of the roast front and center. If your coffee is full of toxins or low-grade fillers, you’re going to taste it. If it’s Peacemaker, you’re going to taste the difference.
The Peacemaker Standard: Clean Fuel for Community Heroes
Before we get to the "how-to," let’s talk about the "what." At Peacemaker Coffee Company, we don’t just roast beans; we engineer fuel for those who serve. Most people don’t realize that standard commercial coffee is often loaded with mold and mycotoxins that cause that "coffee crash," jitters, and gut issues.
We decided that wasn't good enough for our veterans, first responders, and teachers. Our beans undergo rigorous 3rd-party lab testing to ensure a 96% reduction in toxins. We also ensure our beans are mold-free and low-acid, making them gut-friendly for those long shifts.
Choose Your Weapon: The Right Roast for Your Press
Every hero has a preference. Whether you like it bright and energetic or dark and brooding, we’ve got the clean caffeine you need.

The Ultimate Step-by-Step French Press Guide
Ready to brew? Grab your gear and let’s get to work.
Step 1: The Coarse Grind
This is where most people mess up. Do not use the fine "espresso" grind you find in pre-ground grocery store bags. You need a coarse grind, think the consistency of sea salt or cracked peppercorns. If the grind is too fine, it will slip through the mesh filter, leaving you with a muddy, bitter cup.
Pro Tip: Grind your beans right before brewing to keep those SCA 82+ aromatics intact.
Step 2: Heat Your Water to 200°F
Boiling water is 212°F, which is actually too hot and can "scorch" the delicate flavors of the coffee. Bring your water to a boil, then let it sit for about 30-45 seconds. This usually drops the temperature to that "sweet spot" of 200°F. If you want to be a real coffee geek (we support it), use a digital thermometer.
Step 3: Add Coffee (The 1:15 Ratio)
Consistency is the key to excellence. We recommend a 1:15 ratio. This means for every 1 gram of coffee, you use 15 grams of water.
For a standard 34oz French press, that’s about 55-60 grams of coffee (roughly 8-10 tablespoons if you aren't using a scale).
Dump those coarse grounds into the bottom of the empty press.
Step 4: The 'Bloom'
This is the most "visionary" part of the process. Pour just enough water over the grounds to soak them (about double the weight of the coffee). Give it a gentle stir with a wooden spoon and wait 30 seconds.
You’ll see the coffee bubble and expand. This is the "bloom", it’s the coffee releasing CO2. This ensures that when you pour the rest of the water, it can actually penetrate the grounds and extract that toxin-free goodness.

Step 5: The Steep
Pour the rest of your water in a slow, circular motion to ensure all the grounds are saturated. Place the lid on top with the plunger pulled all the way up to trap the heat. Set your timer for 4 minutes.
This is a great time to reflect on your mission for the day or check in on a teammate. Patience is a virtue, especially when it comes to clean caffeine.
Step 6: The Plunge
Once the timer hits 4 minutes, it’s time for the payoff. Grip the handle and press the plunger down. Slow and steady wins the race here. If you feel too much resistance, your grind might be too fine. If it falls right to the bottom, it’s too coarse. It should take about 15-20 seconds of consistent pressure to reach the bottom.
Step 7: Pour and Enjoy
Don't let the coffee sit in the press! Even though the plunger is down, the coffee is still technically brewing. If you leave it in there, it will over-extract and become bitter. Pour it into your favorite mug immediately.
Why "Lab-Tested" Isn't Just for Scientists
You might be wondering, "Does the 96% toxin reduction really matter if I'm brewing it in a French press?"
The answer is a resounding, yes.
When you use a French press, you are getting the most "authentic" version of the bean. If that bean is carrying mold spores or mycotoxins, which are common in lower-grade coffee, the full-immersion method ensures you are drinking all of it. By choosing Peacemaker, you’re ensuring that the "soul" you're tasting is pure, clean, and optimized for your health.
Studies show that clean, high-altitude coffee (like our SCA 82+ beans) is rich in antioxidants and can improve cognitive function and physical performance. When you remove the toxins, you remove the "brain fog" that often follows a standard cup of joe. This is what we call Clean Caffeine.
Practical Tips for the Best Experience
Pre-heat the Press: Before you start, pour some hot water into the glass carafe to warm it up, then dump it out. This keeps your coffee hotter for longer.
Filtered Water Matters: Coffee is 98% water. If your tap water tastes like a swimming pool, your coffee will too. Use filtered water for the cleanest flavor profile.
Clean Your Gear: The oils from the French press can go rancid if left on the mesh filter. Give it a deep clean after every use to ensure your next cup is as visionary as the last.
